Coriolis force in geophysics: an elementary introduction and examples

چکیده
We show how geophysics can illustrate and thus improve classical mechanics lectures concerning the study of Coriolis force effects. Here, we are interested in atmospheric and oceanic phenomena, with which we are familiar, and which are for that reason of pedagogical and practical interest. Our aim is to model them in a very simple way to bring out the physical phenomena that are involved.

An Explication of the Coriolis Effect
The object of this note is to provide an interpretation of how motion on the rotating earth is affected by that rotation. The physical principles to be used are extremely well known, but as far as I know, have not been applied to this problem in precisely this style, a style designed to avoid the solution of differential equations. In spite of its long history, the subject is very much alive, e...
متن کاملCould waves mix the ocean?
A finite-amplitude propagating wave induces a drift in fluids. Understanding how drifts produced by many waves disperse pollutants has broad implications for geophysics and engineering. Previously, the effective diffusivity was calculated for a random set of small-amplitude surface and internal waves. Now, this is extended by Bühler & Holmes-Cerfon (J. Fluid Mech., 2009, this issue, vol. 638, p...
متن کاملDerivation of turbulent energy in a rotating system
Energy equation for turbulent flow in a rotating system was derived in terms of second order correlation tensors, where the correlation tensors were functions of space coordinates, distance between two points and time. To reveal the relationship of turbulent energy between two points, one point was taken as origin of the coordinate system. Due to rotation, the Coriolis force played an important...
متن کاملIntroduction to wind turbine design
2.1 Structure of the atmospheric boundary layer Wind is moving air caused by pressure differences in the atmosphere, initiated by temperature differences. At large heights (~1000 m) the wind is not perpendicular to the isobars but parallel to it due to the Coriolis force (perpendicular to the wind direction, caused by the rotation of the earth). This wind is denoted the geostrophic wind. G : pr...
متن کاملUnsteady MHD Couette-Hartmann flow through a porous medium bounded by porous plates with Hall current, ion-slip and Coriolis effects
Effects of Hall current, ion-slip and Coriolis force on unsteady MHD Couette-Hartmann flow of a viscous incompressible electrically conducting fluid through a porous medium bounded by porous plates in the presence of a uniform transverse magnetic field which is either fixed relative to the fluid or to the moving porous plate is investigated using Laplace transform technique. The expressions for...
